SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Senior Ashot Khacharyan captured his first ever West Coast Conference Singles Player of the Week award this week after scoring a come-from-behind milestone victory last weekend.
Playing in what would be his final home match, Khacharyan stormed back from a first set defeat to down Shane Monroe from No. 65 Brigham Young University by a score of 6-3, 6-3 in sets two and three in Friday's match. In the process, the Sochi, Russia, native clinched his 59th career singles victory, good enough for a tie at the No. 10 position on Santa Clara's all-time singles wins list.
"We are very proud of Ashot for the deserved recognition that he has received this week," said Head Coach Derek Mills. "Ashot has been a tremendous competitor over the years and has showed a lot of resilience this year."
With three more dual matches to go and at least one match in the WCC Championships, Khacharyan can climb even higher on the program's all-time singles wins list. The No. 8 through 10 spots are separated by just four wins.
