SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Eying its first victory on the road and second win over a ranked opponent this season, the Santa Clara men's tennis team came up short on Sunday, dropping its match 6-1 against the University of Arkansas.

The Broncos fell behind early in singles and were unable to regain ground, ceding three consecutive singles matches on Courts 2, 5 and 4 to fall to an even record of 4-4 on the season. Still winless on the road, Santa Clara will look to get back on track when it returns home next Saturday to host the University of Missouri, Kansas City.

"Arkansas jumped on us right from the start," said Santa Clara Head Coach Derek Mills. "That's a credit to them because that's what good teams do. We need this team to have a sense of urgency to play to win."

Opening with doubles, Santa Clara stuck with the same lineup that they fielded against the University of Tulsa on Friday. Competing at the No. 1 position, Ashot Khacharyan and Jeffrey Liang were taken down by a score of 6-3. Moments later, the No. 3 duo of Connor Garnett and Kamran Khan suffered a similar fate, falling 6-2 to give the Razorbacks the 1-0 advantage.

Arkansas kept up the scoring with three straight set victories in singles. Falling to a .500 mark of 6-6 on the year, Robert Seby suffered the first loss 6-1, 6-1 at the hands of Jose Salazar. Khan battled in a ten point first set but was upended in the end 6-4, 6-0 by David Herrerias. Adam Sanjurjo clinched the match for the Razorbacks with a 6-2, 6-4 winner over Garnett on Court 4, pushing the Santa Clara freshman's record to 8-3 on the season and ending his two match winning streak.

Santa Clara's lone victory came at the end of the match when freshman Andrew Gu rallied from a 6-2 defeat in the first set to fight for a 7-6 winner in the second frame. Forced into a tiebreaker, the Albany, Calif. native scored the point, winning the tiebreak 10-7.
