Mountain Pacific Invitational Bracket

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Taking a break from traditional dual match play, the Broncos will travel to New Mexico this weekend to take part in the Mountain Pacific Invitational, a two-day tournament in which the Broncos will compete in three matches.

Along with seven other squads from around the country, Santa Clara will begin play on Friday morning. Seeded fourth, the Broncos will challenge Grand Canyon University at noon before facing their next opponent at 6 p.m. Saturday's contest will kick off at either 10 a.m. or 1 p.m. depending on Friday's results.

"This is a great opportunity for our squad to play against and in front of some quality competition from across the west coast," said Head Coach Derek Mills. "We are excited to get some more matches under our belt before we come back home."

The Broncos

Having not seen action in nearly two weeks, Santa Clara enters this weekend's action with a 5-4 record in dual matches. The Broncos will look to get on the right track in March after going 2-4 during the month of February.

Playing at the No. 1 singles position all season long, Ashot Khacharyan is 5-3 in dual match play and 6-4 on the year.

Recently taking over at the No. 2 spot, Andrew Gu, Santa Clara's hottest competitor as of late, is riding a two-match winning streak and has won three out of his last four contests. In contrasting style, Robert Seby, playing at the third spot, has been suffering through a rough patch since the beginning of February. Since winning against Fresno State University, the Santa Clara freshman is 1-4, dropping three matches in a three set fashion.

Connor Garnett, assuming responsibility of the No. 4 position, is tied with Gu with eight singles wins on the season. Despite a fast start, the freshman from Bellevue, Wash. was defeated in his previous two matches.

Next door on Court 5, Kamran Khan has played exclusively at that position, winning six matches during dual match play. Controlling the No. 6 position, Sebastien Mathieu is 3-4 on the year but winless in his last two matches.

Shuffling its lineup as of late in doubles play, Santa Clara continues to look for a consistent duo to take control of the No. 1 position. This season, three different pairings have seen action at the top spot, amassing a combined mark of 3-5. At the second position, Khacharyan and Garnett recently took over, resulting in a 7-6 doubles point clinching victory. Rounding out the doubles pairs, Khan and Jeffrey Liang possess a record of 4-1, the highest mark for any Bronco tandem competing at the No. 3 spot.
