  • Broncos Set Commissioner's Honor Roll Record for Second Straight Year
    July 23, 2014
    The West Coast Conference announced its 13th annual Commissioner's Honor Roll Tuesday, and 141 Santa Clara Broncos were recognized with honors for their athletic success and academic excellence. Santa Clara had 18 student-athletes receive gold honors (3.75-4.00 GPA) and 33 student-athletes receive silver honors (3.50-3.74 GPA). The Broncos set a new record of student athletes named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll, breaking the previous mark of 133 in the 2012-13 school year.

    Bianca Ziemann enters her first season as an assistant coach at Santa Clara in 2014-15. She spent the last two years as an assistant coach at Oregon. Ziemann first joined the Ducks for the 2012-13 season after accumulating four seasons of coaching experience at the collegiate and high school levels since playing professionally in Europe.

    Toriano Towns enters his first season as an assistant coach at Santa Clara in 2014-15. He spent the last five seasons as associate head coach for Southern Utah. Towns served as SUU’s recruiting and defensive coordinator, assisted with the planning of practice sessions, conditioning, scouting, and also worked with the Thunderbird post players.

    After leading Southern Utah University to a school-record 23 wins this season and advancing to the national postseason for the first time in school history, Santa Clara University is thrilled to announce it has hired JR Payne as the Broncos ninth head women’s basketball coach on Sunday. Payne has been the head coach at Southern Utah for the past five seasons and prior to that, Payne was an assistant coach on the Mission campus in 2008-09. An All-WCC point guard who graduated from Saint Mary’s in 1999, Payne has also served as an assistant coach at Boise State and Gonzaga.

    In the opening round of the West Coast Conference Tournament from The Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Santa Clara women’s basketball fell to Pepperdine by a final of 80-74. The loss ends the Broncos season at 10-20 overall and 6-12 in WCC action while the Waves are now 6-24 overall and 1-17 in conference play.

The Broncos will face Pepperdine at 12 p.m. on Thurs., March 6 at the Orleans Arena. The Broncos are the No. 7 seed with an overall record of 10-19 and a 6-12 mark in WCC play while Pepperdine is the 10th seed with an overall record of 5-24 and a WCC record of 1-17. The matchup will be broadcast live on BYUtv and TheW.tv and will be called by Spencer Linton and Kristen Kozlowski. The winner will advance to play second-seeded BYU Fri., March 7 at 2 p.m. with the same broadcast schedule.

    After a record-setting week, Nici Gilday of Santa Clara women’s basketball was named the West Coast Conference Player of the week. Gilday scored a program-best 40 points vs. LMU on Feb. 27 and followed it up with 22 vs. Pepperdine on March 1.

Last week the Broncos fell at Pacific before upsetting Saint Mary’s 89-83 on the road. The split has Santa Clara at 9-18 overall and 5-11 in conference play.
  • Women's Basketball Goes on the Road to Take Down Saint Mary's

    Wrapping-up the regular season road portion of its schedule, Santa Clara women’s basketball knocked off Saint Mary’s by a final of 89-83. This was the first win for Santa Clara vs. Saint Mary’s since an 82-55 win at the WCC Tournament in 2009. It was the first regular season win vs. the Gaels since an 84-71 win in Moraga on Jan. 7, 2007. It was also the first time head coach Jennifer Mountain or any of the current players have topped Saint Mary’s. The win puts the Broncos at 9-18 overall and 5-11 in WCC action while the Gaels are now 20-7 overall and 10-6 in conference play.

  • Bruno and Choppelas to Have Jerseys Honored at Halftime of San Diego Game Saturday

    At halftime of the San Diego game at 2 p.m. on Sat. Feb. 8, Santa Clara will honor the jerseys of two Bronco greats in Caren Choppelas Horstmeyer '84 and Liz Bruno '82. Bruno is the only women's basketball player in Santa Clara history with 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. Choppelas finished her time at Santa Clara No. 1 on the all-time scoring list and currently sits at No. 3. She was also the head coach of the Broncos from 1988-2000 and led the team to the 1991 WNIT title.
