RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men and women's crews each had a good day at the West Coast Conference Championships held Friday morning at Lake Natoma in Rancho Cordova, Calif.
Gonzaga accumulated 30 points to finish in first place overall, followed by San Diego, which finished with 23 to capture second for the fifth-straight year and sixth time in seven championships. The Bronco women finished third overall with 13 points followed by Loyola Marymount and Saint Mary's.
The Bulldogs caputred the Varsity Eight event by less than half a second over San Diego, finishing in a time of 6:39.70. LMU finished second followed by Santa Clara and Saint Mary's. The Broncos' varsity eight crossed the finish line in a time of 7:01.72.
In the Second Varsity Eight event, Gonzaga finished first with a time of 7:00.70, while San Diego collected second place with a time of 7:11.53 and Santa Clara took third finishing in 7:19.77.
The Bulldogs would also capture the Varsity Four event with a time of 7:41.00, while Saint Mary's took second place with a time of 7:44.29. San Diego finished in third place with a time of 7:54.61, while LMU finished fourth, finishing in a time of 8:22.63 followed by Santa Clara, which finished with a time of 8:38.28 to round out the races.
Amanda Kremer was the lone rower from Santa Clara selected to the nine member All-West Coast Conference team.
On the men's side, the Bronco Varsity Eight finished third while the Junior Varsity Eight won its race by over four seconds. The Varsity Eight crossed the finish line in a time of 5:59.63, just eight seconds behind Gonzaga who won the race. The Junior Varsity Eight won their race in a time of 6:10.90, 4.2 seconds ahead of Gonzaga and 17.5 seconds ahead of third place Loyola Marymount.
Both the men and women will return to the water on Saturday and Sunday for the two-day WIRA Championships that are also being held at Lake Natoma.
