REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men and women's crew completed the First Annual West Coast Conference Challenge Sunday morning at Redwood Shores in Redwood City, Calif. The Broncos were one of six teams that competed in the inaugural event.
Joined by Gonzaga, Loyola Marymount, Sacramento State, Saint Mary's and San Diego, Santa Clara pulled off the event despite strong headwind conditions on day one and rainy conditions on day two.
The Bronco men and women combined to race in five events on Sunday with the men's junior varsity eight coming away with a 6.6 second victory over Sacramento State. The men's varsity eight and women's varsity eight each lost their respective races, falling to Gonzaga by 8.4 seconds on the men's side and by 16.5 seconds to San Diego on the women's side.
The women's junior varsity eight squad for SCU also lost to San Diego, but only by 1.1 seconds in the tightest race of the day. The men's novice eight was the final race of the day for SCU and Loyola Marymount, with the Lions coming out on top by 9.6 seconds.
LMU's men's novice eight, varsity eight, women's varsity four and women's junior varsity eight each won their respective races over Saint Mary's in the first four races of the day. Sacramento State then took two of three races from San Diego, defeating the Toreros in the women's junior varsity eight and men's varsity eight before dropping the women's varsity eight race.
Gonzaga won both of its races on the day, not only defeating the Broncos in the men's varsity eight, but also downing Loyola Marymount by 9.1 seconds in the women's varsity eight race.
Santa Clara returns to the water next week as both the men and the women will take on Stanford at Redwood Shores on Saturday, March 22.
