Crew Takes Victory in Rare Home Dual

April 24, 2004

LOS GATOS, Calif. - The Santa Clara men's crew took a pair of races from UC Davis Saturday in a dual meet at Lexington Reservoir. The meet marked the first collegiate race at Lexington since 1998, due to unpredictable water levels.

Santa Clara Novice 8: 6:48
UC Davis Novice 8 "B": 7:03
Santa Clara Junior Varsity 8: 7:12

Santa Clara Varsity 8: 6:44.7
UC Davis Varsity Lightweight 8: 6:45.0

The novice race was a sort of a rematch of the petite finals of the San Diego Crew Classic, where the UC Davis Second Novice Eight prevailed over SCU's Novice Eight by 0.02 seconds. The novice race was closer than the finishing times show as the UC Davis boat mistakenly stopped rowing just before the finish line.

The Varsity eight was forced to come from behind to catch the UC Davis boat with a strong sprint. They overtook the Aggie crew with about 50 meters to go in the race.

"I'm really pleased with our performances today," said head coach Tony Barcia. "Both of these wins will give the program good momentum heading into the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championship next weekend in Sacramento."
