FRESNO, Calif. - Tamara Surtees birdied two of her final five holes and teammate Balbina Guajardo shot an opening-round 1-under par 71 positioning the two Santa Clara golfers in contention at the 2012 Fresno State Lexus Classic at Copper River Country Club on Monday.
Surtees posted rounds of 72 and 76 and at 4-over par sits tied for sixth among a field of 75 heading into Tuesday's final round. Guajardo was 2-under after her first five holes and went on to card an opening-round 71. Guajardo will enter round two in a tie for eighth.
As a team, Santa Clara got off to a great start, posting a collective opening round of 303, which was good for fourth. The second round 315 dropped the Broncos back to ninth among the 13-team field.
