CHANDLER, Ariz. - Santa Clara University freshman Kaci McCartan (pictured) birdied twice during her final eight holes Monday during opening round play of the 2012 Wyoming Cowgirl Classic at Ocotillo Golf Resort in Chandler, Ariz. McCartan posted a career-best 76 to lead all Bronco players and will enter Tuesday's second round in the tournament's top 40.
The field at Ocotillo is massive, spanning 24 teams and 127 players. McCartan, who has worked her way into the No. 2 spot for Santa Clara, birdied each of the par 3's on the back nine during an impressive closing stretch.
"Kaci played great, she was really consistent all the way around," said second-year Santa Clara head coach Krystal Kelly. "It was fun watching her out there today."
Taylor Camany continues to improve each week following her recent return from mononucleousis. Camany, an All-West Coast Conference honoree last season, posted a 77 and rests in 52nd. As a team, the Broncos were able to out-play seven schools with an overall total of 311.
Iowa was even par on the day as a team to lead all schools. Second-round play begins early Tuesday morning, in the rare three-day collegiate event in Chandler.
