Women's Tennis Falls to Portland 5-2

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's tennis team was defeated by Portland 5-2 this afternoon at the Santa Clara Tennis Center. It was the first West Coast Conference match for both teams this season.

The Broncos fall to 3-3 overall, 0-1 in WCC play, while Portland improves to 4-2, 1-0.

Portland earned the match's first point after sweeping doubles play, led by the top duo of Courtney Perkins and Erin Smith, 8-2 winners over Santa Clara's Christine Limbers and Nicole McCord.

The Broncos did win two of six singles matches. Mariko Kawakami rallied for a three-set victory, a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 win over the Pilots' Katy Smith, in the third singles slot. Bronco Ashley Campbell scored the other point for the hope team with a straight-set victory at No. 6 singles.

The Broncos remain at home to host Saint Mary's on Saturday, March 3. The match will begin at the Santa Clara Tennis Center at 11 a.m.
