SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's tennis team posted its fourth straight victory with a 4-3 win over San Jose State this afternoon at the Santa Clara Tennis Center.
With the victory, the Broncos improve to 10-9 on the season while the Spartans fall to 6-13. Additionally, Santa Clara closes out the home regular season with a 6-2 record.
Santa Clara won the first point of the match in doubles play with a hard-fought victory on the first court. Sophomore Christine Limbers and junior Nicole McCord rallied from an 8-7 deficit to tie the match at eight games apiece. The Bronco duo won the first five points in the tiebreaker--including three straight winners from McCord--before San Jose State tandem Coral Silverstone and Suzi Riley could score one for the Spartans. A baseline winner from Limbers gave the Broncos the 7-2 tiebreaker. The teams split 8-2 scores on the far courts setting up the rubber match.
The teams split the six singles matches, providing the final tally. Sophomore Megan McKitterick and Limbers won in straight sets on courts six and one, respectively, with sophomore Mariko Kawakami providing the clincher on court two with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 come-from-behind win over SJSU's Anna Nordell.
The Broncos return to action on Saturday with a West Coast Conference match at Saint Mary's. The contest, originally scheduled for April 6 but cancelled due to rain, will close out the regular season for Santa Clara. The match is scheduled to begin in Moraga at 11 a.m.
