The Santa Clara women's tennis team, riding a five-game winning streak, fell 5-2 to UTEP at Degheri Center. Santa Clara moves to 6-6 and UTEP advances to 13-5. Santa Clara will travel to Cal State Fullerton for a match on Wed., March 25.
"This was a tough match after finals this week. UTEP is a tough team," said Santa Clara head coach Ben Cabell. "The girls are looking forward to having a break for a couple days and I think that will help everybody."
In doubles, Santa Clara's Kimmi Cox and Kacie Wagner defeated UTEP's Marina Deluca and Vicky Michaud, 8-6. Back and forth at No. 2, UTEP's Carolina DeLuca and Martina Trierweiler defeated Myra Davoudi and Carmen Pham of Santa Clara, 9-7, to win the doubles point.
"We had a chance to win the doubles point and if we could have squeaked that out, it might have made a difference in singles," said Cabell.
Santa Clara won both at No. 5 and No. 6 in singles. Ashley Pane got the best of Megan Pritchard (0-6, 6-4, 6-4) to move her record to 10-2 on the season.
"Ashley played well to come back and win in three sets," said Cabell. "It was a tough match."
At No. 6 singles Courtney Hull won the first set 6-1 and won the match in the second set when Ximena Fuentes retired due to cramps.
