Led by Summa Cum Laude graduate Kevin Oliver's selection to the national individual Academic Award list, the Bronco track programs were honored among all Division I teams on Thursday as the Bronco men posted the second-highest GPA nation-wide at 3.506 when they were named as a U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's (USTFCCCA) All-Academic team.  Posting a 3.57 grade point average, the sixth-best nationally and tops in the West Coast Conference, Santa Clara's women's track team was named an All-Academic team as well.

Oliver was just the second Bronco in school history to receive USTFCCA Academic individual honors.  Oliver finished his senior year with a 3.98 in Political Science and Economics.  With Santa Clara cross country/track receiving the honor for the fourth time in seven years, Oliver was named to the Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-American Second Team in late June.  He was the only student-athlete from the West Coast Conference selected for the national academic honor and the only male in the state of California named to the team.

"We're once again very proud of our teams efforts in the classroom," said Bronco head cross country and track coach Felipe Montoro.  "Our student-athletes exemplify the SCU mission of educating the whole person.  They are successful in so many ways."

The Bronco men led the men's teams for the seventh straight quarter in this spring.  Both the men and women lead the department with the top cumulative GPA.

On the men's side on the USTFCCCA, 111 teams were honored. Arizona was the top men's team in Division I with a cumulative team mark of 3.511, including indoor and outdoor track Scholar Athlete of the Year Lawi Lalang. Santa Clara posted the second-best cumulative team GPA at 3.506, ahead of Chattanooga at 3.505.

On the women's side, 187 teams were honored.  Wofford was the top team in Division I with a cumulative team mark of 3.61. North Dakota finished runner-up at 3.599, followed closely by in-state rival North Dakota State and Oregon State at 3.58.  The Santa Clara women posted the sixth-best GPA with its 3.57.

Proving many Broncos are getting it done in the classroom with four teams checking in with a 3.4 GPA or higher, Santa Clara University's student-athletes recorded a school-record 3.191 grade point average (GPA) for the Spring 2013 quarter.  They also topped 3.0 or better for the 19th time in 20 quarters. Santa Clara's cumulative GPA for its student-athletes is 3.107.

The previous high water marks were a 3.14 GPA for the Spring 2011 quarter and  3.11 in the Winter of 2009.
