Maxime Heerinckx: Starting Strong

Dylan Lynch '16

Bronco tennis player, Maxime Heerinckx (MH), has found early success in his new tandem on the court, though the freshman admits that there is still more work to be done.  Santa Clara Broncos (SCB) caught up with Heerinckx  to discuss his transition from high school to Division I tennis on the Mission campus.

SCB: After the first weekend, you are 2-0 with your doubles partner, junior Michael Standifer.  What do you attribute your early success?

MH: Coach Mills told us over Christmas break that there was a possibility that we would be playing doubles together. Since both Mike and I are local, we spent a lot of break playing together and learning each other's style of play. Furthermore, we both went to the same high school (Bellarmine College Prep) and played on the tennis team there, so we were used to each other already. Additionally, the coaching staff has done an excellent job of improving our doubles play.

SCB: As a freshman on the team, how have you been able to adjust to the Division I level of play at SCU?

MH: To be frank, I definitely struggle with the adjustment to Division I tennis. The level of play was faster and stronger than what I was used to. Luckily, my teammates and coaches were willing to work with me, so that I could get adjusted to the stronger level of play. I still have a ton of improvement to make, but I'm making a ton of progress.
SCB: How has your training and preparation here at SCU been different in comparison to what it was like for you in high school?

MH: Training at SCU is definitely a lot more intense than my high school training. Everyday, my teammates come to practice focused and ready to play. We push ourselves to the limit and the coaches expect the best of us. Additionally, the SCU team trains off court with weights and a trainer. This is a new experience for me.  High school training was much more relaxed and less personalized. It was only on court training and was much less intense then the training at SCU.
SCB: How have some of the older players on the team been able to help you assimilate to the team/new level of play?

MH: My teammates have done a really excellent job with trying to get me to become a part of the team as quickly as possible. They are always inviting me to lunch and dinner and just trying to make me feel as welcomed as possible. In terms of tennis, they treat me like I have been there for 4 years and expect me to play my best. They are always trying to give advice whenever they can.

SCB: A majority of your teammates are from countries outside of the US, has that been an interesting experience for you?

MH: To be honest, there hasn't really been a noticeable difference with the guys. Occasionally, a couple of the guys will start speaking Russian, but other than that things are normal.
