SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Keeping its winning ways rolling, the Santa Clara men's tennis team captured its third win in four matches after taking down Gonzaga University by a score of 4-2 on Saturday afternoon at the Degheri Tennis Center.
Following a doubles point victory, the Bronco workhorses atop the singles lineup handled their matches and a victory at the final singles spot provided Santa Clara with its eight victory of the year on Senior Day.
Santa Clara is now 8-12 on the season and 2-6 in West Coast Conference action. The Broncos will return to action tomorrow afternoon when they round out regular season play against the University of Portland.
Santa Clara came roaring out of the gates in doubles action. Seniors Sam Bertram and Ilya Ostinsev cruised to a 6-1 result and picked up their ninth victory of the season, leading all Bronco doubles tandems. Ashot Khacharyan and Milheil Khmiadashvili followed suit on Court 2 with a 6-2 victory, solidifying their fourth consecutive win of the year.
With the doubles point secured, Santa Clara kept its momentum rolling in singles despite falling in the first completed match on Court 5. Playing on Court 1, Osintsev responded and reclaimed the lead for the Broncos. In the first set, the lefty blew away Alvaro Naval 6-1 and rolled 6-2 in set number two to win match his 14th match of the year and the 64th of his career while wearing the red and white.
Next door, Khacharyan won his 18th match of the year and second in a row with a 6-1, 6-1 throttling of Nick Kamisar. The junior was locked in from the first serve and has returned to his dominant form that he established back in the fall. In five out Khacharyan's last six victories, he has locked up the victory convincingly in straight sets.
Following another Gonzaga victory to cut the Bronco lead to 3-2, freshman Sebastien Mathieu stepped up for the second consecutive match and provided the match clincher once again. The lefty grabbed a 6-4 victory in the first set and held off his opponent in set number two to claim the 6-3 result for his third win of the year and Santa Clara's second consecutive team victory.
