Four Broncos Take Home Postseason Awards

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — On Tuesday, the West Coast Conference announced the winners of the men's tennis postseason awards. Santa Clara's Ilya Osintsev and Ashot Khacharyan took home hardware in both singles and doubles while fellow Broncos Sam Bertram and Mikheil Khmiadashvili collected prizes for the notable performances they put forth with their partners in doubles play this season.

"It's always an honor to be recognized at the end of the year for the contributions put forth by our guys, especially for (Osintsev) and (Khacharyan) taking home honors in singles," said head coach Derek Mills. "But I'm disappointed that the other coaches in the conference did not recognize (Osintsev) as being a deserving member of the first team list. He is one of the best competitors on the West Coast and had a number of significant wins over quality opponents this year."

In singles, Khacharyan and Osintsev, leading the Broncos at the top two singles spots all season, were named to the All-WCC Second Team list. Osintsev, continued to pad his resume during his senior season on the Mission Campus. The lefty captured 15 victories this year, 13 of those coming in dual match play. He poured it on during the back stretch of the season, winning eight of his last nine contests, all but one coming in the form of a straight-set blow out. Included in those victories, Osintsev took out Alvaro Nazal from Gonzaga University and Steffen Dierauf from the University of Portland, two competitors that received All-WCC First Team Singles honors.

Khacharyan, Osintsev's Russian counterpart, posting a team-high 19 wins on the year, proved to be a dominating force in singles throughout the 2014-15 regular season campaign. After bursting out of the gates in the fall, the junior continued his torrid stretch in dual match play, racking up 12 victories and just four losses, with nine of those victories coming in the form of straight-set decisions.

In doubles, Osintsev and fellow senior Bertram along with the Eastern European pairing of Khacharyan and Khmiadashvili were named to the All-WCC Second Team. Leading the squad with 10 victories in doubles play, Osintsev and Bertram caught fire early on in season, experienced a few woes midway through, but reignited their fury in the final month of the season, closing out the regular season on a five-match winning streak.

Right next door on Court 2, Khacharyan and Khmiadashvili put forth similar numbers. The duo was slow to get out of the gates but eventually hit their form, also finishing the regular season with five consecutive victories.
