Santa Clara Water Polo Defeats UC Santa Cruz, Falls to UC Davis

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - Santa Clara's men's water polo team went 1-1 in back-to-back matches this morning in Santa Cruz, defeating UC Santa Cruz 5-3, but falling to UC Davis 8-5.

With the split, the Broncos' record moves to 3-5 on the season.

Junior Dan O'Connell led Santa Clara with three goals vs. the Slugs, with seniors Brian Sprouse and Jeff Raegen adding one each to round out the scoring. Two assists each were earned by senior Jeff Kopacek and junior Jay Moorhead, while senior Andrew Sikic posted one assist.

In the second match, Moorhead scored two goals and two assists to lead the Broncos. Raegen added one goal and one assist while O'Connell and freshman Kenny Flanagan posted the Broncos' final two goals. An assist was also earned by Kopacek.

Senior goalkeeper Matt Petrich recorded 14 blocks and three steels in the two matches.

The Broncos will take part in the Slugfest Tournament this weekend, Sept. 29-Oct. 1, in San Diego.
