Water Polo Falls 10-7 to LaVerne

Nov. 3, 2000

LAVERNE, Calif. - Santa Clara's men's water polo team fell to 18th-ranked LaVerne 10-7 in dual match action this afternoon.

With the defeat, the Broncos fall to 10-16 on the season.

Senior Jeff Kopacek and junior Jay Moorhead scored two goals each for the Broncos, while senior Matt Reilly, junior Dan O'Connell and freshman Kenny Flanagan posted one goal each to round out SCU scoring. Senior goalkeeper Matt Petrich posted four blocks in the match.

The first half of the match was tightly contested between both teams, with LaVerne holding a 4-3 edge after two quarters. Santa Clara tied the match 20 seconds into the third quarter, but then allowed three straight goals, two from a set offense and a third on a man-down situation.

"That was the difference in the game," head coach Steve Hanson said. "We matched them again in the fourth quarter, but in the third, they turned up the pressure on the defense. We saw good looks at the cage throughout the match but didn't put it in the back of the net."

The Broncos close out the regular season tomorrow with two matches in Los Angeles. Santa Clara will first face No. 12 Loyola Marymount at 10 a.m. and then follow with a match against 16th-ranked Air Force at 4 p.m.
