Water Polo Defeats Iona, Chaminade

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Santa Clara's men's water polo team defeated Iona 9-8 and Chaminade 14-5 in the final day of play at the Convergence Tournament.

The Broncos finished the tournament with a 5-1 record and even their season mark to 10-10 overall.

Leading the Broncos in scoring against Iona were Jay Moorhead with three and Eric Akerman with two. Jeff Kopacek, Jeff Raegen, Andy Sikic and Matt Reilly added one goal apiece. Santa Clara was led defensively by goalkeeper Matt Petrich's eight saves.

In the win over Chaminade, the Broncos were led by Moorhead and Kopacek, who produced three goals each. Akerman and Kenny Flanagan added two goals, while Brian Sprouse, Dan O'Connell, Bryan Failing and Logan Gee netted one ball apiece. Petrich added eight more saves to his totals.

The Broncos will compete at the NorCal Tournament in Stockton this weekend, Oct. 21-22. Santa Clara begins the tournament with a 10:20 a.m. match against UC Irvine on Saturday.
