Water Polo Wins Two at Convergence Tournament

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Santa Clara's men's water polo team opened play at the Convergence Tournament this afternoon with two victories, upsetting eighth-ranked Pomona 17-8 and topping Bucknell 11-7.

The Broncos improve to 7-9 on the season.

Leading the Broncos in scoring against Pomona were Matt Reilly with four and Jay Moorhead with three. Brian Sprouse, Jeff Raegen and John Doucette added two goals each, while Dan Figoni, Andrew Sikic, Dan O'Connell and Kenny Flanagan each netted the ball once. Santa Clara was led defensively by goalkeeper Matt Petrich's 10 saves.

The win against Bucknell saw three goals each by Reilly and Jeff Kopacek, with Moorhead adding two and Eric Akerman, Raegen and Figoni adding one each. Petrich supplied eight blocks for the Bronco defense.

The Broncos remain at the Convergence Tournament through Sunday. Tomorrow's schedule includes a 9 a.m. contest against Boston College, followed by a 3 p.m. matching with Redlands, ranked second among Div. I-AAA schools. On Sunday, Santa Clara will play Iona at 1:30 p.m.
