Men's Water Polo Wins First Match at Convergence Tournament

Oct. 9, 2004

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The men's water polo team split a pair of matches in the first day of the Convergence Tournament in Claremont, Calif. on Friday. The Broncos defeated Cal Lutheran 11-7 before falling to Bucknell, 12-8 in the afternoon.

"We played well in the morning and jumped out to a big lead," said head coach Keith Wilbur. "We were able to relax a bit, but we always maintained at least a three goal lead."

The Broncos scored four goals in the first period and held Cal Lutheran scoreless to take an early 4-0 lead. CLU would never be able to overcome the SCU advantage, as it trailed the entire match.

Four different Broncos scored two goals in the contest. Austin Brizgys, Grant Allison, Kevin Starry and Matthew Martin each scored a pair, while Jon Greco, Charlie Moore and Chris Parolin each found the back of the net.

Goalkeepers Robert Callahan and Jon Young shared duties in the cage. Callahan started the match, playing the first half and posting four saves. Young took over after halftime, registering five blocks.

"In the afternoon, we dug a hole we could not get out of," said Wilbur. "Bucknell played a great match, but we should have been better."

Kenny Flanagan-De La Hoz spearheaded the SCU attack with four goals. Martin posted two scores for the second straight match. Allison and Parolin also scored in the contest.

Senior goalkeeper Peter Moore had seven saves against Bucknell.

SCU will face Harvard at 8 a.m. tomorrow before taking on Pomona at 12:30 p.m. The morning match will be played at Claremont, while the match against Pomona will take place in Pomona.
