Water Polo Posts 11-10 Win Over Alumni

Oct. 23, 2004

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara men's water polo team welcomed back its alumni to Leavey Pool on Saturday afternoon for the annual alumni contest. The current Broncos notched a 11-10 victory over the former Broncos on the rainy day.

The current SCU squad jumped out to an early lead, posting a 4-1 advantage in the first period. Jon Greco, Mark Oda, Danny Soares and Kevin Starry each scored in the first frame, while alum and former head coach Steve Hanson also found the back of the net.

SCU continued to keep its former teammates at bay in the second period, taking a 7-4 lead into halftime. Starry posted his second goal of the match in the second period, while Chris Parolin and Grant Allison each scored.

In the third period, the alumni began to make up ground on the 2004 squad as Hanson, Erik Akerman and Jay Moorhead each tallied their second goals of the contest. Starry continued to be a hot hand for SCU with his third score of the match. After three quarters, the 2004 Broncos led the alumni 8-7.

Greco, Allison and Charlie Moore each tallied a score in the final frame to lead SCU to the victory. Hanson and Moorhead each complete hat tricks in the final period, while Daniel Figoni converted a penalty shot for the alumni's final goal.

Prior to the beginning of the match, the Santa Clara water polo program honored former Bronco Jeff Kopacheck, who was killed in an accident in Tanzania earlier in the week. A letterwinner from 1997-2000, Kopachek played two-meter defense for the Broncos.

Earlier in the day, the Broncos faced the Bay Area Masters in another exhibition contest. Santa Clara fell to the Masters, 12-11.

The Broncos will be back in action next Friday when they travel to the Davis Shootout at UC Davis. SCU will take on BYU-Hawaii on Friday at 1:00 p.m. before facing Air Force and UC Davis on Saturday.
