Men's Water Polo Drops Overtime Thriller, 12-11 to Whittier

Nov. 19, 2004

DAVIS, Calif. - After a 9-3 win earlier in the day, the Santa Clara men's water polo team dropped a 12-11 overtime contest to Whittier in the second day of the Western Water Polo Association Championships in Davis, Calif. The Broncos drop to 10-22 on the season after the day's competition.

"It was a great match," said head coach Keith Wilbur. "This whole match was a battle. I am very proud of the way we came out to play today. It was one of those matches where whoever scored last was going to win. Unfortunately, it wasn't us."

Santa Clara trailed 5-2 at halftime. However, the Broncos scored four unanswered goals in the third period to take a 6-5 lead into the final period. SCU scored four in the fourth, while Whittier scored five, sending the match into overtime tied at 10-10. Each team added a goal in the first overtime period, but Whittier scored the only goal of the second extra period to claim the win.

Kevin Starry led SCU both offensively and defensively with four goals and two steals in the match. Kenny Flanagan-De La Hoz scored three goals for SCU, while earning two ejections. Grant Allison also scored multiple goals with two scores and earned three kick-outs. Charlie Moore and Danny Soares each scored a goal to round out the Bronco scorers.

Goalkeeper Peter Moore posted nine saves in the match, along with three steals.

The Broncos will wrap-up play at the WWPA Championships tomorrow with a 10:30 am match-up with Air Force. The winner of the match will claim seventh-place at the tournament.
