Men's Water Polo Wins Pair of Matches at Convergence Tournament

Oct. 9, 2004

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The men's water polo team won two matches, for the first time this season, at the Convergence Tournament in Claremont, Calif. on Saturday. SCU defeated Harvard, 10-9 in overtime before posting a 12-8 victory over Pomona in the afternoon.

"This was a great day for the program," said head coach Keith Wilbur. "This team is learning how to play when they are tired and how to win close matches. It is always nice to take home three victories in a weekend tournament."

The morning match against Harvard was a double overtime thriller as Charlie Moore scored the game-winner. The Broncos had jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but Harvard did not let down, tying the score late in the fourth quarter. Santa Clara scored the first two goals of the first overtime period, but Harvard answered back with two of its own. Moore would then score the Bronco's tenth goal in the second overtime as the Bronco defense shut out Harvard in the final period.

Moore spearheaded the Bronco attack with four goals in the contest. Kenny Flanagan-De La Hoz and Jon Greco each scored twice, while Grant Allison and Chris Parolin each scored once and earned two ejections.

Kevin Starry anchored the SCU defense with four steals. He shut down Harvard's main scoring threat late in the game, forcing five Harvard turnovers. Goalkeeper Peter Moore also was solid in the cage with 12 blocks.

In the afternoon session, the Broncos posted a 12-8 win over Pomona. It marked the first time this season SCU has posted two wins in the same day of a tournament.

Flanagan-De la Hox put together his best offensive match of the season with six goals. Austin Brizgys scored twice for SCU as Allison, Moore, Parolin and Mark Oda each found the back of the net.

Peter Moore had another strong performance in goal as he recorded eight blocks, three steals and an assist.

SCU will next face UC Davis on Saturday, October 16 in a noon match in Davis, Calif. On Sunday, the Broncos will host their first home match of the season with a 1 p.m. match against UC Santa Cruz.
