SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Miyo Kobayashi clinched the match for San José State women's tennis with a three-set win over Katya Tabachnik to give the Spartans a 4-3 win over Santa Clara on Sunday at the Degheri Tennis Center.
The deciding point came on court three where Tabachnik led 6-3, 0-1 when the play was suspended on Saturday. Kobayashi took the second set on Sunday to set up a winner take all third set.
In the third set, Kobayashi won the first three games before Tabachnik came back to get within one game, 4-3. However, Kobayashi secured the last two games to clinch the win for the Spartans, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Entering Sunday, the Broncos (1-2) were ahead 1-0 with each team holding a one set advantage in three of the singles matches.
The Broncos won the doubles point on Saturday when Caitlyn Frankel and Tabachnik beat Kobayashi and Alb Pedrero Galindo, 6-1, at No. 2, followed by the doubles point clincher by Maddie Pothoff and Elvena Gevargiz over Savannah Sendar and Laura Malsert, 6-4, at No. 1.
Five of the six singles matches were quickly decided on Sunday when Gevargiz started things off with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Alb Pedrero Galindo at No. 2 after entering the day with a 6-2, 4-3 lead.
San José State (3-0) got one back at No. 4 when Laura Malsert beat Lindsey Pesqueira, 6-1, 6-2, to cut the Broncos lead, 2-1.
Santa Clara pulled ahead 3-1, when Potoff handled Tamara Culibrk, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1, before the Spartans picked up two points to even the match at 3-all.
At No. 6, Klara Milojkovic beat Nadine Del Carmen, 6-1, 6-1, and at No. 5, Malsert beat Lindsey Pesqueira, 6-1, 6-2.
Pothoff and Gevagiz each picked up wins in doubles and singles in a match that took 27 hours to complete.
