Women’s Tennis to Kick Off 2021 Spring Season with Two Matches This Week

Feb. 20 (10:45 a.m.) Schedule Update Alert: Due to the overnight rain, the start time of Saturday's match has been pushed out by one hour to 1 p.m. PT.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's tennis returns to action for the first time in nearly a year when they face Nevada on Friday to kick off the 2021 spring season followed by a match with Dominican (Calif.) on Saturday at the Degheri Tennis Center.  First serve for both matches are at noon.

Due to current guidelines in Santa Clara County, spectators will not be permitted inside Degheri Tennis Center. In addition, only essential personnel is allowed on campus. The general public is allowed only to 'pass through' campus, such as on a walk, but no lingering, gathering, lounging, etc. is permitted.

All home matches will be live streamed.  Viewers can go to this link and follow the live action on each of the six courts.

The Broncos last played on March 8 before the season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic to finish the 2019-20 season with a 4-5 record.

This spring marks the 15th year at the helm for head coach Ben Cabell who will field an experienced squad with nine returners along with an infusion of young talent.

All-West Coast Conference performers Maddie Pothoff and Madison Clarke return for their fifth season, while Nadine Del Carmen, Elvena Gevargiz and Katya Tabachnik enter their senior year.  Juniors Lindsey Pesqueira and Jamie Schroer round out the upperclassmen class.  Giulia Hayer and Lindsay Lynch are back for their sophomore seasons.

The four newcomers, all with freshmen eligibility, include Gonzaga transfer JennaMarie Gordon, Finley Kalinic from Delray Beach, Florida, Katherine Petty from Dallas, Texas and Varya Zlotnik from Minsk, Belarus.

Pothoff led the team in singles (11) and doubles (16) wins last year while playing atop both lineups.  A two-time all-conference selection in both singles and doubles, Pothoff enters the season ranked No. 33 in the Oracle ITA women's doubles rankings along with Gevargiz.

Clarke is another two-time all-conference player in both singles and doubles who will look to continue to regain her form after being hampered with injuries the previous two seasons.  Last spring, Clarke played at the number two position in singles to compile a 3-3 record and tied for the team lead in most doubles wins in the spring with five.

Gevargiz primarily played at the No. 3 slot in singles and finished the 2019-20 campaign with four straight wins to collect the second most wins in the spring with five.

Schroer played a team-high five matches in the fourth position of the singles lineup going 2-3 and played all her doubles matches at No. 3 to finish 4-4.

The fifth spot in the singles lineup was primarily occupied by four-year starter Tabachnik last season.  In doubles play, Tabachnik teamed up with Pothoff in the spring to go 5-2 atop the lineup.

Joining the squad midway through the 2019-20 season, Hayer played a team-high four matches in the sixth spot going 2-2.

The four freshmen will look to crack the veteran laden lineup that only lost one member from last season's squad, Caitlyn Frankel, who graduated.

Updates will be made to the website schedule as they become available.
