Women's Tennis Falls On The Road To Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. - Portland held off a rally from Santa Clara women's tennis to record a 5-2 home victory on Saturday.

After edging the Broncos for the doubles point in the West Coast Conference matchup, the Pilots (2-10, 1-4) built a 3-0 lead.

Iva Zelic defeated Santa Clara's JennaMarie Gordon 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles and Emily Soares followed with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Jamie Schroer on court three.

But the Broncos (2-11, 0-5) responded as Finley Kalinic rallied in the third set against Portland's Neli Sunjic. Down 5-1 in the third, Kalinic came all the way back for a 6-0, 4-6, 7-5 victory on court two.

Santa Clara pulled within 3-2 when Katherine Petty closed out a 6-4, 7-5 win against Marija Elenova on court four.

But on court five Portland's Rimona Rouf was able to post 6-1, 6-2 win over Lindsey Pesqueira to clinch the match.

With doubles knotted at 1-all, Sunjic and Rouf were able to outlast Gordon and Giulia Hayer for a 6-4 victory and the first point of the match.

The Broncos will conclude their home schedule next week. They will play host to BYU on Friday and San Diego on Saturday.
