SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The 20th-ranked Santa Clara women's water polo team split a pair of matches in the first day of the Slugfest Tournament at UC Santa Cruz on Saturday. The Broncos dropped a 7-5 contest to Pacific in the morning before defeating Sonoma State, 11-2 in the afternoon. The Bronco's record stands at 7-3 after the day's action.

"We played a good defensive game against Pacific," said head coach Keith Wilbur. "We just had some problems capitalizing on offensive opportunities."

Lindsey Bacolini recorded a hat trick in the contest to lead the Bronco scorers. Senior Catherine Flynn found the back of the net twice to round out SCU's goals.

Defensively, Christie Miller paced the Broncos with four steals, while Katie Radvanyi drew a four-meter shot, which Flynn converted. Freshman Randahl Capurro made her first collegiate start in the net and recorded a steal in the contest.

In the afternoon, SCU posted an 11-2 victory over Sonoma State after winning two close 8-7 matches with them earlier in the season.

"We had our best game of the season against Sonoma State today," said Wilbur. "It was our best defensive outing and best performance on the counter attack. It was nice to see everyone get involved."

Eight different Broncos scored in the contest as Kathleen Hamm led Santa Clara with a hat trick. Bacolini added two more goals, while Bryn Asher, Danielle Mansfield, Elizabeth Perry, Emily Bonk, Christie Miller and Radvanyi each scored a goal.

Capurro also played the entire match, posting six saves. Miller recorded three steals, while Perry added two. Perry and Bacolini led the SCU defensive with solid work against Sonoma State's two-meter players.

SCU will continue play at the Slugfest Tournament tomorrow when it faces Cal State Bakersfield and the UC Davis club team in Santa Cruz.
