Women's Water Polo Falls Twice at Long Beach State Invitational

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's water polo team dropped a pair of matches on Saturday in the first day of the Long Beach Invitational in Long Beach, Calif. The Broncos opened the tournament with a tough 8-7 loss to Cal Baptist before falling to Arizona State, 6-3, in the afternoon.

In the opening match of the entire tournament, the Broncos took a 5-3 lead over Cal Baptist into halftime. However, the Lancers would score four goals in the third period and hold SCU to one to take the lead and earn the victory.

Lindsey Bacolini led the Broncos with a hat trick in the contest. Catherine Flynn, Katie Radvanyi, Andrea Evans and Alanna Simpkins each found the back of the net in the contest.

Sophomore goalkeeper Kristin Barnes had a strong match in the cage for SCU. She recorded 12 saves in 28 minutes.

In the afternoon contest, the Broncos once again headed into halftime with an advantage. Leading 3-2 to start the second half, Santa Clara allowed four Sun Devil goals in the second half and scored only one as ASU claimed the win.

Bacolini and Flynn each scored in their second straight match, while Danielle Mansfield rounded out the Bronco scorers. Meanwhile, Barnes psoted six saves in the contest.

The Broncos will continue action at the Long Beach State Inviational on Sunday. SCU will face the host 49ers, along with Pacific in the final day of competition in Long Beach.
