Bronco Water Polo Defeats Cal State East Bay, 13-7

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Four different Broncos scored two goals each to lead the Santa Clara University women's water polo team to a 13-7 victory Saturday at the Leavey Pool.

With the win, Santa Clara evened their record to 12-10 on the season. The Broncos host UC Santa Cruz Sunday at noon at the Leavey Pool in their penultimate home match of the season.

"The score was closer than I would have liked after the first two quarters, but we were able to extend our lead in the final two periods for a more comfortable win," said head coach Keith Wilbur. "This was a good overall win for us, particularly with UC Santa Cruz coming to our pool tomorrow."

Santa Clara gained the early advantage on a first quarter goal by Alanna Simpkins for the game's first score. East Bay then took a 2-1 advantage on back-to-back goals by Gabrielle Keri and Elaine Mashburn that were less than a minute apart.

Following a goal by SCU's Catherine Flynn to even the score, East Bay struck back just :21 seconds later with another goal by Mashburn to take a 3-2 lead. The Broncos managed to score the match's next eight goals to take a commanding 10-3 lead with 2:48 remaining in the third period.

Flynn, Simpkin Katie Radvanyi and Emily Bonk each scored two goals for the Broncos in the match. Goalkeeper Kristin Barnes registered five blocks in the first three quarters of action before relenquishing the pipes to Randahl Capurro and Christina Malley to close out the win in the final period.
