Surber Named GCC Player of the Week

LOS ANGELESElle Surber was named the Golden Coast Conference Women's Water Polo Player of the Week.

Surber, serving as the primary 2-meter defender, combined to score a team-high seven goals in Santa Clara's two games last week, both held on Saturday.

The senior scored the game-winner with less than 3 minutes left vs. No. 19 Hartwick, sending Santa Clara (6-8) to an 11-10 victory, its first over a ranked team this season. The Broncos trailed 10-8 entering the final period, but freshman Mara Dominguez cut the deficit to one, Surber tied the game with her third score. Surber was awarded a penalty shot with 2:41 left and put the game-winning attempt past goalkeeper Michaela Davies.

Surber matched team-high honors with three goals in a 13-4 win over Cal State Monterey Bay, including two in the opening period when the Broncos built a commanding 5-0 lead.

She also combined for two assists, two steals, three field blocks and two earned ejections in those two contests.

Surber leads the team in both goals (27) and assists (16).
