SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's water polo was hoping to keep its hot streak going after a pair of home wins last weekend, but No. 19 Harvard used a quick start and balanced scoring attack Saturday to down the Broncos, 7-5, at UC Santa Barbara.

Elizabeth Anderson and Erin Sheridan scored two goals apiece for the Broncos (6-9) in the neutral site game.

Rachel Lobato and Michelle Martinelli each scored two goals for the Crimson (18-4) who had five players hit the back of the net and built a 5-1 lead through the first 10 minutes of the game.

"They jumped on us in that first quarter with counter attacks and got some easy goals, but once we identified that we were able to make it a game," head coach Keith Wilbur said.

Sheridan's first goal cut the deficit to 5-3 with less than one second on the clock before halftime, but the Broncos were only able to score once more in the next 14 minutes of action.

Sheridan's second goal made it 6-4 with less than 2 minutes left in the third period, but Lobato added an insurance marker with just 25 seconds gone in the fourth.

Francesca Puccinelli, who continues to sub for an injured Sydni Estrella, went the distance in net and registered nine saves.

Anderson had a strong all-around outing, forcing two Harvard ejections and two penalty shots.

"Elizabeth had a really strong game," Wilbur said. "She had a part in every goal."

The Broncos had chances at the offensive end with the man advantage, but went just 2-for-7.

"It was a pretty even game after the first quarter," Wilbur said. "We played well defensively after the first quarter. We just didn't capitalize on our opportunities."

Last Saturday, Santa Clara, which is receiving votes in this CWPA national poll, knocked off No. 19 Hartwick, 11-10, after downing Cal State Monterey Bay, 13-4.

Santa Clara plays 13th-ranked UC Santa Barbara (11-9) at noon Sunday. The Gauchos also lost to Harvard Saturday, falling 9-8.
