Student-Athletes Post Highest GPA on Record in Spring 2010 Quarter

SANTA CLARA, CALIF. - Santa Clara University's student-athletes posted a 3.13 grade point average (GPA) for the Spring 2010 quarter. It is the highest grade point average on record for Santa Clara, topping the 3.11 grade point average the Bronco student-athletes posted in the Winter 2009 quarter.  Santa Clara's student-athletes have achieved a 3.0 GPA or better 10 of the last 11 quarters. Santa Clara's cumulative GPA for its student-athletes is 3.08.

Individually, Santa Clara had 23 student-athletes achieve a perfect 4.0 GPA for the Spring 2010 quarter and 61 student-athletes posted a 3.7 GPA or higher. In addition, 12 teams have a 3.0 GPA or better for their cumulative GPA - with every women's sport posting a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better.

Those 13 teams who posted a 3.0 or better GPA for the Spring 2010 quarter include: men's cross country, men's crew, men's water polo, women’s basketball, women's cross country, women's crew, women's golf, women’s outdoor track, softball, women's soccer, women's tennis, volleyball and women's water polo.

“It was another great quarter in the classroom for Santa Clara student-athletes.  They have more than met the challenge posed to them a year ago when they helped us craft the "Bronco Creed", which included their promise "(to) make the most of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a first-class education at Santa Clara."  I credit our coaches for fostering an atmosphere of academic achievement, and our Academic Support team of Jeff Mitchell, Zoe Segnitz and Jason Stock for all of their efforts," said Santa Clara Athletic Director Dan Coonan.

On the women's side, the women’s soccer team posted the highest GPA at 3.44 for the Spring 2010 quarter. Women’s crew has the highest cumulative GPA at 3.265.

"We are thrilled by this honor of leading the women's teams with our grade point average this quarter. Our team culture places importance on working just as hard off the field as on the field.  I think that has shown this quarter," said head women's soccer coach Jerry Smith.  "We look forward to having trememdous success next fall in the classroom, on the field and in our community."

On the men's side, the men’s tennis team posted the highest GPA at 3.24 for the Spring 2010 quarter. Men’s crew has the highest cumulative GPA at 3.189.

“I am proud of the men's tennis team.  We had a historic year on the tennis courts this year, finishing with a No. 54 national ranking and placing as the runner-up at the WCC Championship. Even more importantly, our team worked hard in the classroom and their efforts were rewarded with the highest grade point average this quarter.  I look forward to their continued academic and athletic progress,” said men’s head tennis coach Derek Mills.
