All-WCC Awards
The 2009 NCAA women's college soccer postseason awards are starting to trickle in, and Santa Clara, who finished 13-6-1 overall and tied for second in the West Coast Conference, placed a number of student-athletes on All-WCC teams this season.
Headlining the group is redshirt senior Jordan Angeli, who was selected as the WCC's Defensive Player of the Year. Angeli, who started all 20 games as one of the two center backs, led the team in goals with six and scored a number of them on set plays (including two penalty kicks). Angeli was integral to the team's success on both ends of the field, and finished tied for second on the team in assists with three.
Angeli was also honored as an All-WCC First Team selection, her first after receiving one second team honor and two honorable mentions in her career. Joining Angeli on the first team is senior Kiki Bosio, who earned her third career first-team selection. Bosio closed the regular season with three goals and six assists, good for second overall on the team in points with 12.
Rookie Allie Vernon was selected as the conference's Co-Freshman of the Year along with Portland's Kendall Johnson. Vernon had two goals and one assist while playing in the midfield, including the overtime winner against Pepperdine and an insurance goal in a 3-1 victory over then-No. 7 Purdue. Vernon also assisted the Broncos first goal against the Boilermakers. The Homer Glen, Ill. native earned All-WCC Second Team honors along with senior Katherine Reynolds. Reynolds, a defender earning her second All-WCC Second Team nod, had one goal and one assists and missed only one game all season.
Receiving honorable mention was senior Amanda Poach, juniors Maxine Goynes and Anessa Patton, and sophomore Jenny LaPonte. Poach, like Angeli, was sidelined the last two seasons with injuries but returned to help the Bronco midfield control the pace of play this season. Goynes and Patton contributed nine combined goals this season to help solidify the Santa Clara attack. LaPonte, who put up three points this season, was the third member of the stifling Bronco defense to be honored that put up eight shutouts and kept opponents to a 0.90 goals-against-average.
Joining Vernon on the All-WCC Freshman Team is Lauren Matheson. Matheson was involved both directly and indirectly in a number of Santa Clara goals this season, and earned nine points on three goals and three assists. Matheson scored in the first and last games of the season, and put the icing on a 2-0 victory over then-No. 5 Notre Dame.
Matheson also earned TopDrawerSoccer.com honors, the only Bronco to do so this year, and was an honorable mention pick for the 2009 All-Rookie team.
