WASHINGTON D.C. - The No. 22 Santa Clara women's soccer team will head back to the West Coast after picking up a win and splitting the weekend, as redshirt senior Jordan Angeli's goal propelled the Broncos past Georgetown 2-1 in the waning moments of the first overtime period.
In the first half, Santa Clara threatened the goal six times, forcing Hoya goalkeeper Jackie DesJardins to make two stops, the first of which came just two minutes into the game. Bronco sophomore netminder Bianca Henninger also needed to make two saves in the half, as Georgetown got both of their chances on frame.
The game was a stalemate until the final minutes of the first half, when junior Anessa Patton took a slotted pass between two defenders from classmate Maxine Goynes and beat DesJardins one-on-one.
The Broncos carried the momentum from the goal into the second half, registering three shots in the first ten minutes of the half, but were unable to hold on to the lead as the Hoyas equalized in the 73rd minute. Georgetown's Amy Speck drove a low hard ball across the face of the goal to teammate Sara Jordan who was able to get on the end of it, knocking the ball past Henninger into the upper corner of the net.
The Hoyas had another chance in the 83rd minute, but were stifled by Henninger's fourth save of the game, sending the match into overtime for the first time of the year for Santa Clara.
Henninger came up big in extra time for the Broncos, making two key saves just moments in to keep Santa Clara alive in the match and give Angeli the chance to put in the game winner. The Broncos' match-ending strike came in the final seconds of the overtime period, when Angeli recovered a loose ball from a scramble in the six-yard box that resulted from senior Kiki Bosio's flip throw-in and stuck the ball in for the win with 13 seconds left on the clock.
Santa Clara finished the game having outshot Georgetown 14-8, while Henninger made six saves on the day. The Broncos (3-2-0) return to the Mission Campus for two big matches next weekend, taking on second-ranked Notre Dame and No. 14 Purdue.
