SANTA CLARA, Calif. - After seeing its two-game winning streak come to an end, Santa Clara men's basketball closes out a three-game homestand Saturday against BYU. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. from Leavey Center in a game presented by JJ Albanese.

On Thursday, Saint Mary's pulled away in the second half, downing the Broncos 81-57. Last week, the Broncos defeated Loyola Marymount, 65-49, in Los Angeles, and held off Portland, 70-68, at home. BYU, which has won 11 of its last 13, is coming off a convincing 83-63 home victory over Pepperdine on Thursday.

• Jock Landale, the WCC preseason player of the year, posted a game-high tying 19 points and 10 rebounds, Calvin Hermanson scored 14 and Emmett Naar directed the offense with 11 assists for the Gaels in their 11th straight win. Junior guard KJ Feagin also tallied 19 points and senior guard/forward Henry Caruso added 11 for the Broncos who were held to 40 percent shooting from the floor.
• Junior guard Matt Hauser scored a career-high tying 22 and freshman forward Josip Vrankic posted a career-best 19 points helping the Broncos edge Portland (Jan. 6). Feagin was held to 10 points, but had six assists for the Broncos who shot just 42 percent from the floor, but forced 14 Pilot turnovers and only committed seven. Caruso made a steal with 1.2 seconds left to prevent a potential game-winning shot attempt.
• Feagin leads the team and ranks third in the WCC in scoring (17.8 ppg) on 46.2 percent shooting from the floor. Caruso is second on the team in scoring (12.6 ppg) and first with 6.9 rebounds per game, No. 7 in the league. Vrankic (11.2 ppg) and Hauser (10.8) are also scoring in double figures. Vrankic ranks second on the team in rebounding (4.9 pg) while Hauser is fourth in the WCC in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.5-to-1) and averages 4.0 assists pg, No. 7 in the league. Hauser (2.4) and Feagin (2.4) rank tied for sixth in the WCC in 3-pointers per game.
• Caruso is one of only two players in the WCC to rank in the top 20 in scoring (16th), and top 10 in both rebounding and steals (sixth - 1.4 pg). Guard Elijah Bryant of BYU is second in scoring (17.9 ppg), 10th in rebounding (6.02 pg) and tied for ninth in steals (1.2 pg).

 

YEAR TWO UNDER SENDEK
The Broncos are in their 111th year of existence, including second under Herb Sendek, who has been successful in each of his three previous head-coaching stops. With a resume that includes 18 postseason appearances and three conference coach of the year awards, Sendek, was one of the three youngest coaches with 400 or more career victories He is in his 24th season as a collegiate head coach with stops at Arizona State, North Carolina State and Miami (Ohio).

QUICK HITS
• The Broncos have generally held on to the ball, registering just 11.6 turnovers per game and possessing a +2.5 turnover margin pg (first in the WCC). Santa Clara and BYU both have a 1.3-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio.
• Santa Clara has struggled to rebound while BYU is middle of the pack in the WCC. The Broncos are -4.9 per game (ninth in WCC) and the Cougars +2.8 (second) in rebounding.
• Santa Clara averages 8.6 3-pointers per game (fourth in WCC) and BYU 6.9 pg (seventh).
• In guard Elijah Bryant and forward Yoeni Childs, BYU possesses two of the most productive players in the WCC. Bryant and Childs ranks second (17.9 ppg) and fourth (17.7), respectively, in scoring and second (8.8 pg) and 10th (6.0) in rebounding.

THE BYU SERIES
The series began in 1951 and BYU leads 28-6. The Cougars had their 14-game winning streak in the series snapped last season when the Broncos came away with a 76-68 victory in Santa Clara (Jan. 26). Jared Brownridge scored a game-high 25 points, including 14 in the second half, and Nate Kratch and KJ Feagin tallied 16 each for the Broncos who nailed 14 3-pointers and held the Cougars to just three. BYU owns a 13-1 series lead joining the WCC for the 2011-12 season. Prior to last year, the last victory for Broncos was a 66-64 victory in Provo, Utah, on Dec. 2, 1972, though the teams only met once (Dec. 30, 1986 in the Cable Car Classic) in a 38-year span.

TRENDS
The Broncos have posted three of their fewest foul totals of the season in the last four games, including a season-low 10 vs. Portland (Jan. 6) ... KJ Feagin has reached double figures in 16 of the 17 games (nine points vs. Gonzaga, Dec. 30) ... Feagin has six of the team's 11 20-point scoring games this season ... Matt Hauser has connected on 22 of 49 field-goal attempts (44.9 percent) in the last four games, but had just two points vs. Saint Mary's ... Feagin has connected on his last 21 of his last 22 free-throw attempts ... Hauser has 14 assists and three turnovers in the last three games ... a career 52 percent free-throw shooter, Emmanuel Ndumanya has made 11 of his last 12 from the line ... after connecting on just 29 of 45 (64.4 percent) from the free-throw line in the previous two games, the Broncos are 61 of 78 (78.2) in the last five outings, including a season high 88.2 percent (15 of 17) against Pepperdine (Dec. 28).

Anthony Passarelli (play-by-play) and John Stege (analyst) will call the action during the season on radio and through TheW.tv at home. All Broncos home games and West Coast Conference contests (not on an ESPN platform or BYUtv) will also be streamed through TheW.tv (local blackout restrictions apply for games broadcast over the air).
