Crew Programs Post Strong Showing at Davis Invitational Regatta

March 6, 2005

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - In its second consecutive day of competition in its opening weekend of the spring season, the Santa Clara crew programs headed to Sacramento for the Davis Invitational Regatta on Sunday morning. After claiming wins in both the varsity four and eight a day earlier, the Bronco men placed second and third, respectively in those races in Sacramento. The Bronco women finished third in the varsity eight race and fourth in the novice eight.

"The racing today gave us a clear indication of where we are at this early point in the year," said men's head coach Tony Barcia. "UC Davis is traditionally one of the stronger crews that we compete against and they always are a challenging crew to race on their home course. The squad is making steady improvements but has many things to work on in the next several weeks. I look forward to seeing this group race throughout the season."

The meet opened up with the varsity eight race at 8:12 a.m. The California club team claimed a win in the race in a time of 6:08.8. UC Davis placed second at 6:11, while the Broncos crossed the line in third at 6:14.6. UC Santa Barbara rounded out the field in fourth in a time of 6:21.1.

Due to both UC Davis and Santa Clara having more than one novice eight boat, the invitational featured a novice eight B race, which began at 9 a.m. One of two UC Davis boats came in first at 6:37.8, while the Broncos came in second in a time of 6:49.0. The second UC Davis boat placed third at 6:50.0

In the third race of the day, Santa Clara placed third in the novice eight category. UC Davis also claimed a win in that race in a time of 6:23.0. Sonoma State was a very close second at 6:23.8. The Broncos crossed the line in a time of 6:42.1 as UC Santa Barbara followed at 6:56.5.

The day's final race began at 1 p.m. with the varsity four competition. The Broncos finished a close second to Sonoma State's 7:04.9 with their own time of 7:05.4. UC Santa Barbara placed third at 7:08.4, while Cal Maritime rounded out the field with a time of 7:21.4

On the women's side, Santa Clara placed third in the varsity eight race. The Aggies claimed the win in a time of 6:51.16, with UC Santa Barbara in second at 6:58.52. The Broncos rounded out the field in a time of 7:20.91.

In the novice eight race, the field increased to four boats as UC Davis once again took the win on its home course in a time of 7:15.77. Sonoma State and UC Santa Barbara were second and third, respectively. The Broncos crossed the line in fourth in a time of 7:37.25.

Both the Bronco men's and women's crews will return to action at the WCC Challenge on March 19-20 at Lake Natoma.
