May 12, 2005

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Men's and women's rowing crews from the Santa Clara University will be competing this weekend at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta on the Schuylkill River in Fairmount Park.

The Bronco men will be racing Friday in the men's varsity heavyweight eight and are seeded 12th out of 30 teams, marking the first time in the school's history to achieve that distinction. SCU will face Albany, Connecticut, Loyola, Georgia Tech and Michigan in its first round race at 10:30 a.m. The top finisher in the heat advances straight to semifinal on Saturday, while the remaining teams will race in the repechage for a second opportunity to advance.

The women will also be racing in the varsity heavyweight eight at 11:05 a.m. in a heat with Army, Delaware, Purdue and West Virginia.

The Dad Vail Regatta is the largest collegiate regatta in the United States, with over 100 colleges and Universities from the U.S. and Canada. Thousands of student-athletes visit the city of Philadelphia during the weekend of the second Saturday of May.
