SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara men's crew will travel to Boston, Mass. this weekend as the varsity eight is set to compete at the 40th Annual Head of the Charles regatta, the world's largest two-day rowing event. The regatta is also one of the world's largest spectator events as well, drawing over 300,000 fans in past years.
In its first ever trip to the Head of the Charles, the SCU varsity eight will compete in the Championship level race, which is one of the final two races of the event, starting at 3:09 p.m. Eastern time. After a strong showing in last season's Pacific-10 Championships, the Broncos were placed in the elite division with some of the strongest boats in the world. The Netherlands' national team and traditional powers Harvard, Princeton and Cambridge are all set to compete in the 37 boat race.
"SCU is racing in the Championship level event, as opposed to the collegiate or club level event," said head coach Tony Barcia. "This will put us up against several national team crews and elite collegiate crews from around the country. We will be competing against some very strong programs, which are at the level that we are constantly working toward."
Along with Barcia, the rowers are just as thrilled to be travelling to Boston.
" I can't believe this is happening," said senior Daniel Jordan. "Its a once in a lifetime event that I'm sure I'll never forget. I'm looking forward to the big crowds and fast competition."
"I've rowed for six years, and this is going to be a great experience since it is such a high level competition," said junior Tony Guglielmi.
