SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Santa Clara men's rowing begins the homestretch of its 2016 season Friday and Saturday at the WIRA Championships in Lake Natoma. The Broncos have a total of five boats in action: Varsity 8, Second Varsity 8, Novice 8, Varsity 4 and Novice 4.

Saturday's competition features heats for most of the day and third/petite finals in the afternoon, while Sunday's slate is mostly finals. Two of the Bronco 8 boats earned No. 1 seeding in their heats and the Second Varsity 8 boat is a No. 3 seed.

"Since the Stanford Invite, we have made some changes to various lineups and have tried to gain some more speed," head coach Jay Farwell said. "The team has been working hard and we are looking forward to getting on Lake Natoma for some competitive racing."

"We will face a number of crews that we have already seen at the SD Crew Classic and the Stanford Invitational," Farwell said. "There are a number of crews from the northwest that will make the trip south and it will be our first interaction with these crews this season.

"We were fortunate to draw the No. 1 seed for both the Varsity 8 and Novice 8 events. Both of these boats earned this seeding but will have a tremendous push from some of the other crews in their races. It is going to be a good challenge for us and I am looking forward to seeing how the team responds to the challenge."
