This Week Santa Clara men's golf begins play on Monday at the Aztec Invitational in Murietta. The two-day tournament covers 54 holes at the Southern California Golf Association Member's Club. The par-72 layout measures 7,000 yards. The Aztec Invitational will feature 13 other teams: CS San Marcos, Dartmouth, Denver, Eastern Washington, Louisville, Portland State, Texas-San Antonio, Utah, Utah State, Wichita State, the Swedish Junior National Team and host San Diego State.

At the Countrywide Home Loans Intercollegiate Santa Clara placed 10th at the Countrywide Home Loans Intercollegiate, at Simi Valley's Wood Ranch Golf Course. The two-day tournament, Oct. 16-17, covered 54 holes. Wood Ranch is a par-72 layout measuring 6,796 yards. As a team, the Broncos shot a 312-301-307--920, 56 strokes over par. The men were in 14th after the first round, and improved five spots after the second, behind Tony Okano's low round of the day, a two-under-par 69. Okano led the Broncos with his seventh-place finish. UC Irvine won the team competition, recording a 22-over-par 886 over three rounds. CS Stanislaus was second, followed by Austin Peay State, CS Sacramento and Arizona State.

Broncos Place 17th at Pacific Invitational to Open Season The Santa Clara men's golf team placed 17th in its first tournament of the season, the Pacific Invitational. San Diego State won the event with a 19-under-par 845. Individual medalist honors went to California's J.R. Ruda. The Broncos posted a 77-over-par 941 with senior Drew Corwin the top SCU finisher, tying for 67th place with a 14-over 230. The two-day tournament covered 54 holes. The Reserve is a par-72 layout measuring 7,000 yards.

In the Rankings Santa Clara is not ranked in the second edition of the MasterCard/Collegiate Golf Foundation's rankings, released Oct. 4.

At the Amateur Junior Sandy Horacek failed to advance to the third round in the 100th U.S. Amateur Championship at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, N.J., Aug. 22. Horacek carded a six-over-par 77 on the Upper Course, a par-71, 6,887-yard design. In addition to his 77 in the first round, played on the Lower Course, Horacek's two-day total of 154 placed him in a 13-way tie for 184th. Only the low 64 scorers advanced. The projected cut was five-over-par.

Horacek qualified Aug. 8 at the SCGA Members Club in Temecula, Calif. He shot a 70-71--141 and earned the second of four qualifying spots. Qualifiers were culled from 36 holes of stroke play at 97 sites throughout the country, between July 24 and Aug. 8. Aside from the 30 exempt players, Horacek was one of 282 qualifiers from a field of more than 7,000 golfers.

The U.S. Amateur is the most coveted amateur title in golf. Many top professionals--Palmer, Nicklaus, Mark O'Meara, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods--grace the Havemeyer Cup. In addition to the Cup, the champion also will receive exemptions from various future qualifying rounds and an invitation to the 2001 Masters Tournament, if still an amateur.

Senior Joe Wagner qualified as an alternate, but did not attend.

Head Coach John Kennaday John Kennaday (San Jose State '87) is in his third season as Santa Clara's head coach. A touring professional for six years, Kennaday was a member of the Canadian PGA Tour between 1992 and '94. He was also a member of the 1994 Nike Tour. Additionally, he was a member of the Golden State Tour for six years, between 1988-94. While a Spartan, he earned first team All-PCAA honors in 1986 and '87 and was named an All-American in 1987. Prior to San Jose State, Kennaday spent two years at Monterey Peninsula College, where he was a conference golf MVP in 1984 and `85.
