Late Goal Sinks Men's Soccer Against SMU

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's soccer fell to SMU Friday night at home 1-0 on a late goal by the Mustangs.

The two teams played a dead-even match for much of the night. Santa Clara (0-5) attempted six shots and put two on goal, the same numbers as SMU (4-1). The Mustangs drew five corners while the Broncos earned three.

The lone goal of the match was scored in the 86th minute. Off a corner, Garrett McLaughlin saved the ball from going over the end line with a looping pass right to Philip Ponder inside the six-yard box. Ponder one-timed his shot into the net.

The Broncos nearly took the lead in the 80th minute but Keanu Mendoza's shot was saved by Michael Nelson who made two saves.

Starting for the second consecutive game, Henning Jolivet made one save.

NOTES

  • Santa Clara is now 5-2-1 all-time against SMU.
  • Jolivet is the first Bronco goalkeeper to make two starts this season.
  • Kyle Schumann saw his first action since the season-opener and played 30 minutes.
