This Week Santa Clara men's tennis opens the season this weekend at the Wathen/Hancock Bulldog Classic in Fresno, Calif. The three-day tournament includes a singles and doubles draw.
At the Bulldog Classic The Bulldog Classic will include players from California, Cal Poly, host Fresno State, Nevada, Oregon, Pepperdine, Santa Clara and Washington. Play will begin Friday morning at 8 a.m. The format is a 64-draw singles with consolation for first-round losers, and a 32-round doubles bracket. All singles matches will be best of three tiebreak sets while doubles will be an eight-game pro set.
In the Rankings Santa Clara finished the season ranked 65th, according to the WingspanBank.com/ITA rankings. No singles players or doubles tandems are ranked entering the season.
Head Coach Sean Burns Sean Burns (Holy Cross '88) enters his eighth season at the helm of the Santa Clara men's tennis program. With a 97-75 overall record, he is the second-winningest coach in school history. After taking over in 1994, Burns has transformed the program into one of the up-and-coming powers on the West Coast. A three-time West Coast Conference Coach of the Year, Burns guided the Broncos to a second-place finish in the WCC in2000 and has also led the team to back-to-back third-place finishes at the WCC Championships in 1997 and '98.
