This Week Santa Clara men's tennis competes in their second fall tournament in as many weeks when they head to the StockCoverage.com Classic in Stockton, Calif. The three-day tournament includes three 32-player singles draws and two 16-tandem doubles brackets.
At the StockCoverage.com Classic The StockCoverage.com Classic will include players from CS Sacramento, Nevada, host Pacific, San Francisco, Santa Clara, UC Davis and UC Santa Cruz. Play will begin Friday morning at 9 a.m. There are consolation brackets for first-round losers in all three singles draws. Sophomore Ryan Livesay is seeded third for the Broncos in the Gold singles bracket and received a first-round bye. He will play Santa Cruz's Nick Cunningham at 1:15 p.m. In the Black singles draw, freshman Michael Duong is seeded second and will face Paul Dilloway of UC Davis in the first round at 9 a.m. Freshman Eric Chen is the top seed in the Silver singles lineup, while sophomore Adam Lewis is seeded second. Chen will face the winner of Nevada's Ivan Anderson and UC Davis' Creighton Macy at 11:30 a.m., while Lewis will take on Joey Proietti of UC Davis at 10:45 a.m. in Friday morning action. Doubles play will begin Saturday. Livesay and freshman Rick Ruso are seeded second in the American bracket while Duong and Lewis are the top seed in the National draw.
Last Week Santa Clara opened the season last weekend at the Wathen/Hancock Bulldog Classic in Fresno, Calif. The three-day tournament included a singles and doubles draw.
Matt Cox, Michael Duong, Adam Artunian and Adam Lewis all advanced to the second round of the singles tournament with Cox advancing to the Round of 16, before falling to the tournament's fourth seed, Andrej Biznak of Washington, 6-2, 6-3.
Although Frederico Mattioli fell in the first round of the singles draw, he advanced to the consolation semifinals before falling to California's Niro Nakamura 8-1.
In doubles, four of Santa Clara's five tandems advanced to the quarterfinals, with Livesay and Mike Bruggemann and Duong and Lewis advancing to the semifinals. Livesay and Bruggemann fell to the CS Sacramento duo of Joseph Gilbert and Sherif Zaher 8-5 while Duong and Lewis went extra sets before falling to California's Nakamura and Wayne Wong 9-7.
In the Rankings Santa Clara finished the season ranked 65th, according to the WingspanBank.com/ITA rankings. No singles players or doubles tandems are ranked entering the season.
Head Coach Sean Burns Sean Burns (Holy Cross '88) enters his eighth season at the helm of the Santa Clara men's tennis program. With a 97-75 overall record, he is the second-winningest coach in school history. After taking over in 1994, Burns has transformed the program into one of the up-and-coming powers on the West Coast. A three-time West Coast Conference Coach of the Year, Burns guided the Broncos to a second-place finish in the WCC in 2000 and has also led the team to back-to-back third-place finishes at the WCC Championships in 1997 and '98.
