SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Celebrating three seniors on Senior Day, the No. 32 Santa Clara men's tennis squad downed West Coast Conference rival Saint Mary's 6-1 in is first WCC match of the weekend. The Broncos improve to 18-4 overall and 4-1 in WCC play.
Santa Clara started by picking up the doubles point. The tandem of Ilya Osintsev and John Lamble, who are the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's No. 59 tandem in the country, began with a 7-6(4) victory over Joakim Norstrom and Steve Dawson. Kyle Dandan and Tom Pham teamed up for a win before Eugene Muchynski and Nicolas Vinel completed the doubles sweep.
With the doubles point secured, senior Kyle Dandan won his Senior Day match in straight sets. Dandan, the nation's No. 76 singles player, defeated Maxime Olivan 6-3, 6-3. In the No. 2 singles spot, Lamble bested his opponent to tally his third-straight victory. Vinel, the Broncos' other senior playing in the match also won in straight sets downing Seif Elsherbini.
"I was happy for the senior to get a WCC win on Senior Day," said Santa Clara head coach Derek Mills. "I hope we can take the momentum we had in today's match and come out strong tomorrow [against No. 19 San Diego]."
The Broncos battle No. 19 San Diego in a pivotal WCC match tomorrow, Sun., April 15, on the Mission Campus at 12 p.m. The match was orginially scheduled for Fri., April 13 but moved to Sunday due to bad weather.
Maxime Armengaud, who has been injured this season, was also honored on Senior Day.
