SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The No. 32 Santa Clara men's tennis team picked up an upset victory over No. 19 San Diego in a pivotal West Coast Conference match on Sunday. The Broncos edged the Toreros 4-3 to improve to 19-4 and 5-1 in WCC matches. The Broncos' seventh win against a ranked opponent was highlighted by Kyle Dandan and John Lamble's wins against ranked singles opponents.

San Diego started out by picking up the doubles point. The Toreros won the No. 1 singles bout before Dandan and Tom Pham combined for an 8-4 victory in the No. 2 spot. The Toreros prevailed in the third doubles match and secured the point.

Trailing 1-0, the Broncos picked up two impressive victories in singles. Dandan, the nation's No. 76 singles player, downed No. 36 Nikola Bubnic 6-4, 6-4 to even the dual match. In the No. 2 spot, Lamble picked up a three-set upset victory over No. 91 Patrick Pohlmann. Lamble fell 1-6 in the first set before winning two-straight sets to win 1-6, 6-0, 6-2.

The Toreros fought back with two victories of their own and took a 3-2 lead. However, Santa Clara's Ilya Osintsev and Eugene Muchynski came up with key victories in the No. 5 and No. 6 spots. Osintsev blew by Victory Pugliese 6-1, 6-0 to even the dual match 3-3.

In the final singles slot, Muchynski battled to three sets with Ciaran Fitzgerald. The Santa Clara junior picked up the first set, but lost the second. Muchynski continued to fight and prevailed 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 to push the Broncos to a 4-3 victory.

"I am so proud of the whole team after this win," said Santa Clara head coach Derek Mills. "USD is a great team and we slugged it out today in a barn burner."

The Broncos finish their WCC schedule in the Northwest with matches at Portland and Gonzaga. The Broncos travel to Portland on Fri., Apr. 21 and Gonzaga Sat., Apr. 22.
