SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's basketball team announced the signing of two players, head coach Michelle Bento-Jackson announced during the late signing period that began in April. Tracey Walker of San Jose will enter as a freshman and Megan Foy will transfer from Ohlone College in the East Bay and will be a junior.
Next year's class now includes four players. The Broncos signed two guards during the early signing period last November. Chandice Cronk of Wasilla, Alaska; and Sara Majors of Aumsville, Ore., will join Foy and Walker as newcomers to the Bronco program for the 2004-05 season.
Walker, a 5-5 guard from San Jose, was the Central Coast Section's Senior of the Year, averaging 25 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and five steals at Valley Christian High School. She was also the CCS's Freshman and Sophomore of the Year in 2001 and '02, with an injury as a junior preventing the career sweep. She is a two-time All-State honoree and holds school records in total assists, steals rebounds, three-point field goals made and three-point field goal percentage while also holding the single-season mark for points. This past season, she recorded five triple-doubles and set a CCS single-game scoring record, notching 53 points against Fremont of Oakland. She reached the 30-point plateau on eight occasions while recording more than 20 points 26 times.
She decided on Santa Clara over San Jose State, Washington State, Loyola Marymount, San Francisco, UNLV and Chico State.
"We are very fortunate to get such a quality player in the late signing period," Bento-Jackson described. "Tracey is going to bring us quickness and penetration, which are some things we had lacked this past season. She is going complement our other guards and is capable of playing one or two different positions to elevate our style of play. One of her biggest strengths is getting into the gaps and getting people involved. I'm excited for Tracey; we think she has a very bright future here at Santa Clara."
Foy is a 6-1 forward/center originally from Minneapolis, Minn. The business major spent the past season at Ohlone College in nearby Fremont and averaged 16 points, 15 rebounds, four assists and one block while leading the Renegades to the Coast Conference Championship. She also earned second-team All-State honors and was named the Coast Conference MVP. An All-State player out of the Minnehaha Academy in Minneapolis, Foy spent her first collegiate season at Montana State, and scored 20 points in a Big Sky conference game at Sacramento State.
"We are extremely excited to have Megan join our program in the fall," Bento-Jackson added. "She is going to bring a different level of intensity, as she's a very fierce competitor. She has a passion for the game and everything she does is just extremely aggressive. We feel she can step in and be an impact right away."
