Rivalry Series Continues as Bronco and Spartan Women Collide

Dec. 16, 2005

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Fresh off of a two-game trip to the Greater Northwest in which they earned their first road win of the season, the Santa Clara women's basketball team gets right back to work Saturday night as they host the San Jose State Spartans in a Rivalry Series match-up at 7:30 p.m. in the Leavey Center.

Santa Clara, winners of the Rivalry Series since its inception in the 2002-03 season, leads the 2005-06 Series by a tally of 14-2 heading into Saturday night's game. The Broncos have captured victories in men's basketball, men's and women's soccer, women's volleyball and men's cross-country while the Spartans' lone win came in women's cross-country.

Thursday night at Eastern Washington the Broncos (3-6) charged past the Eagles by a score of 85-54, led by Michelle Cozad's second-straight double-double effort, this time scoring 23 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Kayla Huss scored 12 and handed out six assists while Chandice Cronk scored 10 points and freshman Kimee Goeggel added another 10 for the first double-digit scoring night of her career.

Cozad has averaged 18.5 points and 12.0 rebounds in the two games earlier this week, the first being a narrow 82-77 loss to Montana on Tuesday night. Ashley Gonnerman scored a career-high 27 points in that games and grabbed five rebounds as well.

The Spartans (3-4) will be looking to reach the .500 mark this season following a week which saw them fall to California before notching a 78-66 victory over Colorado State. San Jose State is led by the play of forwards Amber Jackson (18.1 ppg, 10.7 rpg) and Lamisha Augustine (17.1 ppg, 9.0 rpg).

Last year's game saw Gonnerman score a then-career-high 22 points and grab seven rebounds and Huss drill a game-breaking three-pointer with five seconds left to deliver the winning points for Santa Clara in a thrilling 75-74 win. The Broncos lead the overall series with San Jose State by a 22-20 margin.
