Santa Clara Places 12th Bay Area Classic

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's golf team concluded action at the ninth annual Bay Area Classic, hosted this afternoon at The Golf Club at Boulder Ridge in San Jose. The Broncos concluded the two-day event with a combined scorecard of 678 and finished in 12th place out of 13 teams.

Santa Clara improved 12 strokes over yesterday's opening round, carding a 45-over par 333 in today's action on the par-72, 6,095-yard layout. The squad was led by Samantha Trask, who tied for 28th place after notching a 79 today and finishing with a 163. Jenny Nelson placed 39th, three strokes behind Trask. Corey Utsurogi and Stephanie Cope finished within one stroke of each other, as Utsurogi carded a 174 and Cope a 175. Whitney Saulsberry improved 11 strokes over yesterday's round and placed 66th at 189.

Co-host San Francisco rallied from an eight-shot deficit after the opening round to capture team honors by one stroke over fellow co-host San Jose State. USF fired a 625. BYU finished in third with a 628 and first-round leader Fresno State settled for fourth with a 629. UC Irvine and Hawaii tied for fifth with 636s. The Anteaters' 305 in the second round marked the lowest single round of the tournament.

The Dons' Mariko Shimozaki earned medalist honors on a scorecard playoff, after shooting a two-under 34 on the back nine. She bested Hawaii's Dale Gammie, after both carded 150s. BYU's Rachel Newren and UC Irvine's Angela Won shared third place, with Won's three-under 69 marking the lowest round of the tournament, and the only player to score a round under par.

Santa Clara will continue the spring season at another tournament hosted by San Jose State, the Spartan Invitational. The 36-hole event will take place March 7-8 at Corral de Tierra Country Club in Salinas. The Broncos will host their annual SCU Colby Classic on March 21-22 at Rancho Canada Golf Club in Carmel.
