SALINAS, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's golf team improved its final round by 12 strokes and finished in 14th place at the Spartan Classic, hosted by San Jose State at Corral de Tierra Country Club in Salinas. The Broncos posted a 316 today to finish with a three-round total of 967.

Samantha Trask led the Broncos with a 16-over 229, after firing a two-over 73 to close out her final round. She tied for 40th with two other participants. Candice Palmer tied for 62nd with a 240, after carding a 79 this afternoon. Corey Utsurogi added a 247, good for 69th place, and Jenny Nelson followed with a 251, 71st place showing. Stephanie Cope rounded out the Bronco scorecard with a 267 total for 73rd place.

Sixth-ranked UCLA, the defending national champions, shot a 289 today to win by two strokes over fifth-ranked Washington. The Bruins placed three of their five golfers in the Top 10, led by Susie Mathews' three-under 68 in the final round to finish third with a 213. No. 28 UC Irvine placed third and No. 34 UNLV and No. 38 California tied for fourth.

The Bears' Sophie Andersson won individual medalist honors by five shots over the Rebels' Elena Kurokawa. Both shot even-par 71s today and were the only golfers to complete the tournament with under-par scores.

Santa Clara returns to action in two weeks, hosting the SCU Colby Classic at Rancho Canada Golf Course in Carmel, March 21-22.
